Behind the Scenes with Claudia Burgoa
Writing is a long and painful process that involves distancing myself from the insanity of my everyday life. Having an at home office, this isn’t always possible. That’s why I count on the little things to get me through writing sessions (hopefully) without the chaos of my family.
I need the basics like my laptop to write with and my monitor to multitask; and to see better…and it’s a touch screen so that’s fun. Reference books are normally stacked around my desk. Some are for fact checking but a lot are thesauruses to keep words from going stale. Sticky notes keep my scattered thoughts in order—or at least somewhere where I can see them later for when I forget what the heck exactly was my idea. I write all my notes in one of the thousands of colored pens I have stored up. There isn’t a precise color coding system (most of the time), but they’re pretty and give me a nice detail to focus on if writer’s block is killing me and my mind is wondering to another story.
When you get to writing as many hours as I do, you need to add a few essentials to make up for not moving an inch for a very long time. Water bottles are always on hand to keep me hydrated and I have a secret drawer for chocolate. Partly for when I need a quick snack or some comfort food; otherwise I’m hiding them from everyone else in the house so they can’t get to them while I’m working. Typing accessories are a Godsend: specialized keyboard to prevent carpel tunnel, a hand-warmer over my mouse and a foot rest. And then for those times when life gets too hectic, I have my iPad and wireless keyboard to write on the go or just get out of the house.

Born on the mystical day of October 30th in the not so mystical lands of Mexico City, Claudia grew up with a childhood that resembled a caffeine-injected soap opera. Seventeen years ago she ventured to the lands of her techie husband—a.k.a. the U.S.—with their offspring to start a new adventure.
She now lives in Colorado working as a CFO for a small IT company, managing her household filled with three confused dogs, said nerd husband, two daughters wrought with fandoms and a son who thinks he’s the boss of the house. To survive she works continually to find purpose for the voices flitting through her head, plus she consumes high quantities of chocolate to keep the last threads of sanity intact.
