Behind the Scenes with Carly Phillips
A Look Inside Carly’s Office
I’ve always had my own space. Even when it wasn’t much of an office and I had to make do with wherever I could find room. At first it was in a corner of our bedroom, but my husband heard the clicking of the old computer. Then I moved to the room next door to my first daughter, but even as a baby, she heard the clicking. So I put the tiny workspace desk in the corner of the great room in the kitchen and I worked there for a year until we moved to a house and I had my own upstairs space in a room above the garage. And then we moved to the house we would be in for the next 20 years (and counting, I’m still here.) I have an office, a bedroom next door to the master bedroom. It’s my dream office for one reason. It’s all mine and it’s comfortable.

For years I worked at a computer at a desk until one day, one of the girls got a mac laptop for the holidays. One look and I fell in love. The laptop defines my workspace now. I can work anywhere. Where is “anywhere”? Usually one of two places: a recliner in my office, facing the big television (I write to TV - usually soap operas - which ones are a story in and of itself but suffice to say, these days, Days of Our Lives and General Hospital).  When I don’t have those, I try to hunt for any Law and Order marathon. From raising kids and writing at home, I can write midst chaos. So the recliner and laptop when it comes to an “office.” We have a second home in Florida and I bought a recliner for the bedroom and carved out my own corner there so I would feel like I have my own space. I can also work in the evenings in my bed, so I’m with my husband while he’s watching TV. I believe the laptop keeps my marriage going because I’m not holed up in an office 24/7 which I would be if I was tied to a desktop!

The other necessity, and this will come as no surprise to those who follow me already, my dogs. I have a mutant Havanese (he is 20 lbs) and he climbs on the chair, I taught him to turn around and he lays next to me while I work. Sometimes he tries to stop me from working by laying his head on the keyboard. And there’s my beautiful baby girl wheaten terrier, Bailey. She likes to hang behind the chair in a corner or on the floor in front of me. I did my best to give you a view of my various workspaces and pets. Enjoy!

Holiday Cheer with Carly Phillips

Favorite Holiday memory as an adult - wrapping up the different gifts for the kids and the huge amount of boxes that arrived from online shopping every year!
Favorite Holiday memory as a child - Picking gifts my parents would lay out on a long table we had in the den for Hanukkah and receiving a pair of comfy pajamas (I can’t remember what they looked like but I remember loving them) and a Neil Diamond 45 LP record of Longfellow Serenade (don’t judge me, LOL!).
Favorite holiday food - potato latkes (nice Jewish girl food!)
Favorite holiday song - Grandma Got Runover by a Reindeer (again, don’t judge me!)
Favorite holiday movie - Frosty the Snowman (and the bunny rabbit who made the cutest noise in that movie). The little girl’s name is Karen (my real name).
Do you dress your pets up for the holidays? Strangely enough coming from me, the crazy dog person, no I don’t LOL!
If you could change one holiday what would it be? I’d put Hanukkah and Christmas together every year!

Follow Along with Rocking the Holidays tomorrow, December 17th where author Sydney Logan will be featured on the sites listed below, plus there will be ways to enter the contest daily!
