Synopsis
Emily ~
What would you do if you knew when you were going to die?
Would you will death to come and claim you quickly?
Or would you pray for more time?
It wasn’t until I knew that I was about to die, that I decided to really live.
And it wasn’t until I gave up on love, that I finally found it.
Just not in any of the places that I’d been searching.
Sometimes you don’t get the fairytale happily ever after,
but if you’re lucky,
you get so much more.
You get a perfect beginning that you can keep hold of until the end.
EMPTY Promises Elle Brooks
Excerpt…
“Where’s Dad?” I ask as I watch Mom pull a packet of coffee from the back of the cupboard.
“He’s gone for a run, sweetie,” she says matter-of- factly before throwing me a smile. Mom’s got a great game face. If I’d not overheard her conversation, I’d have no clue she was just upset.
“Okay, I have an idea, and I want you to just trust me, so grab your things and come with me. We’re going out.”
Mom looks a little bewildered by my cryptic request before she shrugs and grins. “Fine, lead the way, Emily.”
We climb into her car and I scroll through my phone until I find the address of the nearest bridal store. I locate one three miles away and begin inputting it into the GPS. Mom looks at the address, and I can see the gears in her head turning as she tries to work out the address and wonders what would have me dragging her out the house for. She’s a good sport and doesn’t seem too put out that I’m refusing to tell her what it is we’re doing as we make the short journey.
A few minutes roll by before we pull up outside Dana’s Bridal Boutique, and the GPS signals that we’ve reached our destination on the left. Mom looks at me questioningly and I give her a rueful smile. There’s only a bakery, coffee shop and the bridal store on this small stretch of road.
“I overheard you and Dad talking this morning.” She still looks confused so I point to the Bridal Boutique. She covers her mouth with her hand as she leans back into her seat, her eyes crinkling as realization dawns. “You were talking about the fact that you should go first, and that you’ll never see me in my wedding dress, or be there with me at the delivery of your first grandchild. Well, there’s little I can do about an immaculate conception,” I shrug, “but this,” I point to the store again. “This I can do.”
I watch as a million different emotions wage war behind her sapphire eyes before she admits defeat, closes them tightly and slumps forward resting her elbows on her knees and her head in her hands. I watch quietly as she holds a finger up to me, signaling she needs a minute. When she finally opens them again, they’re glassy but she seems to have recovered her composure enough to step outside the car. I don’t know what to make of the situation, and honestly, I’m regretting my decision as I climb out and round the car. Maybe this was a stupid idea and is too much for her. Hell, maybe it’s too much for me. I’m about to apologize and tell her so when she finally speaks.
“You really are something kind of wonderful, Emily,” she says before ambushing me in a fiercely tight hug. I sigh and feel a little of the tension drain from my shoulders, like someone’s just turned on an invisible faucet to ease some of the pressure.
“I’m sorry you heard that conversation. I was just having a weak moment. We don’t have to do this,” she whispers into my hair and squeezes before pushing me back to see my face.
“I’m glad I did hear, and I want to do this. Is that weird?” I answer, and it’s the truth. I am glad I overheard their conversation. I hate that she feels like she needs to be strong one hundred percent of the time for me. It’s not healthy.
“It’s not weird at all, Emily.”
“Good. Okay, enough of this.” I square my shoulders. “Let's get in there and go play dress up.”
Hello...
I'm a little neurotic; I function on a tiny amount of sleep and a huge amount of caffeine. I love green skittles and have an irrational fear of stormy weather. When I’m not writing about super hot college guys, you can generally find me googling them...All in the name of research of course. I can be persuaded to do just about anything with the promise of a good book or a bottle of bubbles. Oh, and I also love to write.
Elle is the author of the Promises Series including:
Book #1 is "Promises Hurt" released in August 2014.
Book #2 is "Forgotten Promises" released November 2014.
DEVASTATINGLY BEAUTIFUL!!!!!
My soul has been beautifully gutted and my heart is filled with love for Elle Brooks...I can not express in any words truly how amazing the Promises Series is...
Promises Hurt and Forgotten Promises are 2 of my all time fave books, and now I can add Empty Promises it as well!
You know.. going in, that this book is going to be painful.. of course you know because Emily has Leukemia, and you know from the other 2 books that she has lost her battle with this disease... but you really really really don't get how gut wrenching reading Emily's words will be...
There are 2 scenes in particular for me in this book... OMG... SNOTFEST... SOBS... just beautifully painful... amazingly real... gorgeous and devastating at the same time...
Don't get me wrong.. there is humor in this book, and beautiful life experiences from a girl trying to live everyday to her fullest...
The fact that Elle pulls from personal experiences, its just GAH!!! EPIC!!
Please do yourself a favor and read this series... Let Emily's words work loving magic to your soul!
A gazillion stars!
I knew it was going to hurt, but I didn't count on falling in love all over again.
Okay, so I love this series, there is no denying it! Promises Hurt and Forgotten Promises were my top reads of 2014. I always felt a connection to Emily throughout the first two full length novels due to her letters and diary entries, but I didn't expect this novella to have the impact that it did considering the length of its predecessors, but thankfully, it delivered big! They say the biggest surprises come in the smallest packages and my goodness... Emily's story will stay with me, always.
In a nutshell, Empty Promises is a fulfilling, beautiful and deeply emotional love story told by a terminally ill girl, so be prepared to stock up on tissues! Although, I would like to strongly emphasise this was no pity party! Emily is gracious and incredibly strong, her outlook on life and her fear of hurting those she is to leave behind makes her a very credible heroine, and as much as my heart was breaking for her, she received more in terms of respect and admiration.
Lucas Wade, my sweet darling boy, where did you come from? I didn't think anyone could hold a candle to Ethan but Lucas sure does give him a run for his money. It was impossible not to love him.
My heart feels heavy, and somewhat shattered, but mostly, it feels full of love and heartfelt respect for these amazing characters and to the incredible talent that is Elle Brooks for giving us such a beautiful story to love, life, death and everything in between.
What is so clever here is that this can be read as either a standalone, book three in the series as originally intended, or as a series prequel. It works either way, but I am so pleased I read it last.
If you love authors such as Colleen Hoover, AL Jackson and enjoyed Bright side by Kim Holden, then this series is an absolute MUST!!!
Favourite passages: I guess he just scares me because he makes me hope, and there's no room for that in the time I have left. I'm not scheduled for a happy ever after, and I'd finally put myself at peace with that. But now here he comes along, like Prince Charming's sexy pierced brother, and something's shifting.
I'm scared.
"I could love you so damn easily, Emily. It would be no effort at all. I want... fuck, I need you to let me try and win your heart because I've never met anyone who deserves to know what love is more than you."
Like I said... MUST READ!!!
Epic!
This is a prequel novella to the amazing Promises series. This can be read before or after books 1 & 2 or as a standalone.
You know you've read a good book when you are sitting with mascara and snot running down your face whilst your husband and children are looking at you like you are a absolute freak. Be prepared for this book to do that to even the most hard hearted readers amongst you. This is a story that will rip you apart.
Emily has Leukaemia. She has battled it for 2 years and now when she should be preparing to graduate from high school alongside her best friend Blair, she is having to come to terms with the fact that she may never graduate high school because... she is dying. Despite the best attempts at treatment, her cancer is now terminal.
How does an 18 year old girl process her impending death? How does she go about spending her last 6 months knowing that she will never achieve her dreams and aspirations? How does a young woman deal with knowing that she will never get to feel the joys of falling in love.
This book is Emily's journey. It's an emotional, witty journey that will have you crying as well as giggling and experiencing every emotion in between. Told in first person as well as in the form of a diary, we learn Emily's hopes and fears. We witness how she deals with her own grief as well as those closest to her. We also watch her meet a person that will make her final few months breathtakingly beautiful.
I have to tell you that as I write this review I have tears rolling down my cheeks. That is how much this book has effected me. The story that Elle has wrote is heartbreaking but it is also a read that will leave you knowing that at Emily's passing, she made it to a place that she never thought possible given the time she had left.
I am going to close my review here as although I could write on and on, I have a nose that needs blowing and make-up that needs re-applying. I also don't want to give anything more away.
A beautiful, heartbreaking read about the final months in a young woman's life. Told in a captivating, witty and genuine way, this is a MUST READ addition to an already awesome series. It will stay with me forever. Yes, it's that type of book.
